Retromachine: Official RHR Benchmarking System for DX6-DX8 Suites

This system is solely used for the global benchmark comparisons on this site.

It has enough CPU performance for the fastest DX8(.1) cards out there and its VIA KT333 chipset ensures compatibility to older graphics cards, that can only handle 3,3V AGP.

Hardware:

  • EPoX 8KTA3+ (VIA KT333)
  • AMD Athlon XP-m (Barton) @ 2133 MHz (16x133) @ 1,575V
  • 512MB Corsair CMX512-3200XLPRO v1.1 @ DDR266 CL2 2-2-5
  • Western Digital Caviar WD800BB
  • 3Com Fast Etherlink XL PCI

Software:

  • Windows 98SE
  • Unofficial Servicepack 2.1d
  • DirectX 8.1
  • VIA 4in1 4.56
  • VIA AC'97 Audio 4.05.00.1130

To make sure that all results are correct and stay comparable even if further cards are added to the performance indexes that this system is used for, I restore a completely configured OS image before I test a new card. To make things easier to handle, I stored the image on the second partition and added the software Drive Image 3.0 to the Windows 98SE startup menu:
